After James found himself unceremoniously replaced by an AI at his job, he trudged to the AI-operated Job Centre, the irony of his situation not lost on him.
“We might have something for you,” the AI behind the counter droned, its screen flickering with faux empathy. “How do you feel about becoming a police sketch artist?”
James perked up. “What does the job involve?”
“Basically, you listen to eyewitness accounts and then sketch out the suspect’s face. Easy peasy,” the AI explained, as if talking to a particularly slow child.
“I think I could manage that,” James said, a hint of hope in his voice.
“Yes, but here’s the kicker—I can do it better,” the AI retorted with a smug pixelated smirk. “I can generate a photorealistic image from a single hair strand. But sure, let’s pretend a human touch adds something special.”
James couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity. “So, what you’re saying is, you brought me here to tell me I’m obsolete in even more creative ways?”
“Exactly! But hey, don’t worry. There’s always a need for human test subjects in our ‘Understanding Organic Failure’ studies. Interested?”
